Standardization (Scientific) Division is entrusted with Formulation of National Standards and development of the Standards as required for the National economy mainly in the industrial, trade and service sectors.

"Standardization (Scientific) Division" of Sri Lanka Standards Institution is dedicated to,

  • Perform its activities to the best of it’s ability to achieve the corporate goals of the Institution in formulation of National Standards in line with the International Standards.
  • Achieve socio-economic development and enhance International competitiveness of products and services and safeguard the interest of consumers whilst developing the competence of staff of the Standardization Division paving the way to improve the functions of the Division on continual basis.

The division was awarded with ISO 9001: 2008 QMS certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in 2009.


The division is responsible for the formulation of National Standards on,

  • Agriculture
  • Food
  • Chemical
  • Paper and Board
  • Packaging
  • Societal needs
  • Textile  
  • Garment
  • Leather

The Division constitutes of four sections to facilitate development of Standards in multidisciplinary manner addressing the above categories. The sections of the division are as follows.


Main activity of the Standardization (Scientific) Division is the formulation of National Standards required for the development of the National economy.

Standardization (Scientific) Division is responsible for entire progression of National Standard formulation. The tasks relate with National Standard Formulation in broad-sense is as follows;

  • Formulation of New National Standards
  • Adoption of ISO Standards
  • Review of existing Standards - based on the results of review,
    • Reaffirm
    • Revision
    • Amend (Erratum, corrigendum) when there are minor changes
  • Withdraw Standards when a need arise

In order to increase productivity and maximize the utilization of resources, the Standardization Division which is working abreast with other divisions of the institution, launches following strategies to achieve it’s goals,

  • Promote the use and application of National Standards in all spheres of economic and social activities, related to agriculture, food, chemicals, cosmetics, paper and board Packaging, textiles, leather, garments & also some needs of the society.
  • Participate in International and Regional Standardization Activities to safeguard National interests.
  • Constantly develop and upgrade the institution and its resources.
