1. Energy Management Certification Scheme (ISO 50001)

Energy Management System is a series of processes that enables an organization to use data and information to maintain and improve energy performance, while improving operational efficiencies, decreasing energy intensity and reducing environmental impacts. It is applicable to all organizations regardless of type, size and product or service provided.

 

What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001:2011 is a voluntary International Standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to provide organizations an internationally recognized framework to manage and improve their energy performance.

The purpose of ISO 50001 is to enable organizations to establish the systems and processes necessary to improve Energy performance, Including energy efficiency, use & consumption.

It is applicable to all organizations regardless of type, size and product or service provided.

What is an Energy Management System?

Any management system is a set of interrelated or interacting elements set up to establish organization policy and objectives to achieve those objectives.

An energy management system is a series of processes that enables an organization to use data and information to maintain and improve energy performance, while improving operational efficiencies, decreasing energy intensity, and reducing environmental impacts.

What initial steps shall I take to establish an Energy Management System in my organization?

1. Purchase ISO 50001:2011 Standard

2. Take preparatory steps toward establishing an energy management system (EnMS)

3. Develop an Energy Policy that includes commitment to the EnMS from top management

4. Identify a Management Representative to lead implementation of the EnMS

5. Establish a team of representatives from major functional areas of the organization

6. Decide on the boundaries of the EnMS

7. Once prepared, take steps toward implementing an EnMS:

· Undertake an energy review to identify significant energy uses, their energy consumption, and opportunities for improvement

· Establish an energy baseline

· Identify energy performance indicators for tracking energy performance improvement against the baseline

8. Implement better procurement practices for energy-using equipment, systems, and processes

9. Develop Energy Manual and Procedures: A consultant, if hired, will undertake this work

10  Provide Training & Awareness to Staff

11 Conduct self assessments or Internal audits

What should I submit to the SLSI for obtaining ISO 50001 Certification?

You should submit the following to the SLSI

1. Duly filled application obtained from the SLSI

2. A copy of the Energy Manual & records on Energy Review

What is the certification process implemented by the SLSI?

The steps of the certification process include the following;

1. Reviewing your application

2. Conducting adequacy audit on the energy manual submitted by you

3. Conducting Stage I assessment

4. Conducting Stage II assessment

5. Awarding certificates

6. Surveillance of your EnMS

How should the SLSI monitor my EnMS?

The certification cycle is 3 years. After awarding the certificate, two surveillance audits will be conducted annually (Free of charge) to ensure the following objectives.

1. Whether the EnMS of your organization is in compliance with the ISO 50001:2011 Standard requirements.

2. Whether the steps taken by your organization within a given year are effective to achieve energy targets specified by your organization.

3. To determine whether there is any room for improvement

At the end of the third year, the certificate expires and needs to be renewed.
